How Australian term deposit rates move

Term deposit rates in Australia track the RBA cash rate closely — but not perfectly. When the RBA raises rates, banks typically pass on increases to depositors within weeks. When the RBA cuts, banks often move faster and more aggressively on deposits than on home loans.

Shorter terms (3–6 months) tend to react fastest to cash rate moves. Longer terms (2–3 years) move less frequently and reflect where banks expect rates to be over the life of the deposit, not just today.

Short vs long terms — what the trend tells you

  • If short terms are higher than long terms, the market expects rates to fall. Banks are paying more now because they expect to offer less in future. Locking in a longer term while rates are high can protect your return.
  • If long terms are higher than short terms, the market expects rates to rise or stay elevated. Shorter terms let you reinvest at higher rates sooner.
  • Watch the spread between Big 4 and challengers. Smaller lenders typically pay 0.30–0.60% more than the Big 4. When that gap narrows, challenger banks are cutting; when it widens, they're competing harder for deposits.
